CP, CE1, CE2: a single program for three levels — and why it's not a problem

In elementary school, the official program is written for the entire cycle. What distinguishes CP from CE2 are the end-of-year expectations. Understanding this logic avoids many back-to-school worries.

Back to the start of the school year file

A parent searching for "the CE1 program" finds a text that talks about CP, CE1, and CE2 at the same time. This is not a search error: elementary school programs are written for cycle 2, and this same text applies to all three levels.

Where the difference between the three years lies

It lies in the end-of-year expectations, specific to each level in French and mathematics, derived from the annualized programs published in April 2025. The cycle indicates the direction; the year indicates the endpoint.

The three priorities of elementary school

  • Reading: fluency first, comprehension second. Choppy reading prevents understanding, even when the vocabulary is known.
  • Writing: copy accurately, then independently write correct sentences.
  • Calculation: automate numerical facts to free up attention for reasoning.

At these ages, ten to fifteen minutes a day are better than an hour on Sunday. It's regularity that establishes automatisms, not volume.
